Co-pay, sub-limits and room rent: why you were paid less
12 Oct 2026 · 4 min read
A partial payment is not always an error. It is worth checking whether the deduction comes from a term in your policy, and whether the insurer applied it correctly.
Common reasons for deductions
- Co-pay: you agreed to pay a fixed share of every claim
- Room rent limit: a cap on daily room charges, which can reduce other charges in proportion
- Sub-limits: a cap on specific treatments or procedures
- Non-payable items: certain consumables and administrative charges are excluded
- Deductible: an amount you bear before the insurer pays
How to check
Ask the insurer for the claim settlement breakdown, then match each deduction to a clause in your policy wording. If a deduction has no clear basis in the policy, raise it in writing.
Understanding these terms before you buy is the best protection. If a claim has already been reduced, an advisor can help you test each deduction against the policy.
